چکیده
BACKGROUND/AIMS Data on contact allergy to fragrances in the general population are limited. Data from allergological services suggest that the frequency of contact allergy to fragrances is increasing. The European Dermato-Epidemiology Network (EDEN) Fragrance Study aims to obtain reliable data on the prevalence of contact allergy to fragrances and other sensitizers of the European baseline series, in the general population of different geographical areas of Europe. We report the methodology and the reliability of instruments adopted and discuss the feasibility based on a pilot phase. METHODS Descriptive epidemiology survey. A random sample from the general population is selected and interviewed, and is offered patch testing in a randomized way. We specifically enquire about any skin rash reported during the previous year, and any history of reactions to products that may contain the sensitizer and/or a history of avoidance of the same products. Patch test data are linked to the questionnaire information to define clinical relevance. RESULTS The questionnaire showed high test-retest reliability in 94 individuals. Patch test reading also showed a high level of interrater reliability. During the pilot phase, a total of 589 participants were recruited. CONCLUSIONS The EDEN Fragrance Study is feasible and able to provide useful data on fragrance allergy.

Contact sensitization to fragrances other than fragrance mix I in China.
Although fragrance mix I (FM I) has been widely used to detect fragrance allergy, it can only detect up to 85% of fragrance-allergic patients (1). In the recent study by Mann et al. (2), only 57.6% of patients tested with an extended series of fragrance ingredients (the 26 substances required to be labelled in the EU) also reacted to a fragrance marker in the baseline series. In 2005, we report...

BACKGROUND We aimed to determine the prevalence of contact sensitization in the general population and to investigate associations with important sociodemographic and medical characteristics. METHODS Within a population-based nested, case-control study in Germany, we performed patch tests with 25 standard allergens in 1141 adults (50.4% female, age median 50 years). Additional information was...

Fragrances and fragranced formulated products are ubiquitous in society. Contact allergies to fragrance chemicals are among the most common findings when patch-testing patients with suspected allergic contact dermatitis, as well as in studies of contact allergy in the general population. The routine test materials for diagnosing fragrance allergy consist mainly of established mixes of fragrance...

متن کاملContact allergy to fragrances: current patch test results (2005-2008) from the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology.
BACKGROUND Contact sensitization to fragrances is common both in clinical and in population samples. The spectrum of allergens is broad and diverse, and to some extent covered by a set of screening agents. OBJECTIVES To examine the current frequency of contact sensitization to fragrance allergens in patients routinely patch tested for suspected allergic contact dermatitis with the baseline se...
